To some, leaving Miami for a place less bright and balmy this time of year may seem like a travel faux pas, but when the destination happens to be Paris, all bets are off. As I prepare to embark on my trip to the fashion capital of the world, I am ready for whatever the city has in store for me; be it rain, snow or the occasional ray of sunshine. Because being in Paris is a lot like falling in love. It is supremely spontaneous, undoubtedly euphoric and while you’re enthralled by the affair her imperfections go virtually unnoticed.
So when it comes to packing, what should you bring? January is usually a fairly mild month in Paris with temperatures in the 40’s-50’s (winter speaking). But I recommend planning for the worst. And since I’ve had over 2 months to sartorially map out my winter getaway, I can only hope that my Paris-bound selections help you, too. Just keep in mind 3 things: There will be precipitation, you’ll enjoy your trip much more if you stay comfy and try to wear muted colors if you want to pull off the ‘Parienne chic.’
HANDBAGS: Pack smart. Bring only the bags that will match most things. It is usually best to pick a color palette and stick to it. The best choice are neutrals and be mindful of packing only the most versatile pieces for use during both day and night.
CLOTHES: Bring along a blazer. It will go equally well with jeans and dresses all while keeping you nice and toasty. As far as bottoms go, pack lots and lots of boyfriend jeans. They will be your go-to item while you’re strolling through the streets, sightseeing and day drinking. Then later at night you can dress up the outfit with a pair of stilettos.
A LBD is always a must, as well a classy cocktail dress. You never know when an opportunity presents itself to wear one and it’s good to be prepared. With this in mind, bring a nude pair of heels. It’s a classic item that will go with your jeans, skirts and dresses. Whatever you do, keep it simple. If you get the urge to spice things up, unveil your flirty little skirt or a pair of leggings with tasteful leather detailing to pair with your earth tone tops. The key is to stay warm while looking super cute.
ACCESSORIES: Keep in mind that you will be spending a big chunk of your time outside so bring lots of scarves. While you’re at it, wear red lipstick, it will keep you feeling sexy even when you’re all bundled up. Another tip is to throw a small umbrella in to your bag. Sometimes the rain comes on out of nowhere and you want to be ready. And of course, to stay on trend this winter bring your wide brim hat along with some beautiful statement jewelry.
SHOES: Ah, the shoes. If there’s one item I always overpack, it’s shoes. So you may want to trim the list when packing yourself. I love my rag & bone booties, I really do. Each serves its purpose so I feel the need to bring them both. Make sure to only bring shoes that are super comfy. Lastly, you will also need a pair of black and brown flat boot as well as a classic wedge sneaker.
OUTERWEAR: You’re going to be moving around, so pack a cropped pea coat. It will be the perfect fit for jeans and dresses and will transition perfectly from day into night. Oh, and bring tights in both grey and black. They are a great way to make dresses more casual by trading in the pumps for boots.
Now you’re all set. Bon voyage and au revoir!
