Every year I make the obligatory best and worst dressed list from the Golden Globes. This year I thought I’d try something a little more fun. To me, the difference between an unfortunate outfit and an unforgettable one is a matter of leaving something out or sprinkling something in. It all comes down to the eye of the beholder which in this case would be the celebrity stylists. So instead of calling out the stars, let’s see which stylists nailed it and which missed the mark. In case you missed it, this is what went right and what went oh-so wrong in the fashion choices of the night.
Gravity Defying Cleavage And The Outfits To Prove It
Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad
Siena Miller in Miu Miu
Kate Hudson in Versace
Katherine Heigl in Zac Posen
Kate Beckinsale in Elie Saab
Best Loaner Necklace
Lorde glamourous in Neil Lane
Naomi Watts bold in Blvgari
Less Is More, But More Is Less Appealing
For Salma Hayek, the belt would have been a nice addition to the lovely Alexander McQueen gown but then she threw in a hair flower and all that bling plus the matchy Alexander McQueen clutch and that put the outfit over the edge for me.
I’m usually a huge fan of Claire Danes on the red carpet. This time the Valentino dress that she chose would have been perfect on its own without the matchy-matchy earrings and the blue eye shadow to go with it. Those earrings were actually quite stunning if they were paired with a monochrome dress and were made to be the focal point of the outfit.
Camila Alves is an example of Golden Globe hair color gone wrong. A true beauty, Camila is one of those women that looks better with naturally dark hair instead of the stripy mess she ended up with.
Best Trends Of The Night
Let’s not forget that tonight was full of trends to keep our eye on. Fist of which was the belted gown. No other accessory added instant edge or was more flattering. As a personal preference, I liked the contrasting look rocked by Kate Mara with her gorgeous red Miu Miu gown. Since we all already wear belts with virtually everything, why not give an evening gown a try?
Second red carpet trend that I loved was the fancy-shmancy pants suit worn by the likes Emma Stone who wore Lanvin and Lorde in custom made Narciso Rodriguez. In case you weren’t convinced by the People’s Choice Awards, this should solidify the fact that pants suits are here to stay! And you have to admit, you’ve probably grown tired of wearing dresses to black tie events anyway.
The third trend of the night was a beauty one. This year some major starlets decided to go minimalistic on the eye makeup. So embrace the no-makeup look if it looks good on you or don’t. Either way, it’s always nice to have the option.
Is There ‘Booing’ In Fashion?
Keira Knightley, who I thought would blow us away with her chic maternity style was a huge disappointment with her ‘Little House On The Prairie’ inspired Chanel Dress. One thing is certain, she should have never left the house in that hideous dress.
I wanted so much to love Amal’s outfit. After all, she has nailed every look I’ve seen her wear. That coupled with the fact that I just love her. I know that she must have been under a lot of pressure, but this wasn’t one of her best selections. If I had to make a sartorial judgement call on her behalf, I would have nixed the gloves. They were more Pretty Woman and less old Hollywood.
And since I don’t want to end the night on a negative note, here are my BEST DRESSED picks. There were quite a few to choose from. See if you agree.
